The novel references the real historical case of Martin-Guerre, a man whose identity was famously disputed after a stranger returned claiming to be him years after his disappearance. This two-chapter story imagines a fellow soldier who served alongside the man calling himself Martin-Guerre during his years away — a man forced to reckon with his own uncertainty about a comrade's true identity once the dispute becomes public, and what that uncertainty costs him personally.
